EVANSTON, Ill. -- With an opportunity to play for the Big Ten regular-season title next week on the line, the eighth-ranked Northwestern field hockey team closes out its 2012 home season as it squares off against No. 20 Michigan State and Missouri State.

    Friday's contest gets underway at 3 p.m., while Sunday's match is slated for a 12:30 p.m. start.

Northwestern will honor its five seniors -- Chelsea Armstrong, Shannon Disbrow, Colleen Petronchak, Kaylee Pohlmeyer and Amanda Wirth -- in pregame ceremonies on Sunday prior to their final home game.

The Wildcats enter Friday's contest tied for first place in the Big Ten with a 3-1 record alongside Penn State and Iowa. NU defeated the Nittany Lions 5-4 in overtime on Sept. 28, while the 'Cats are slated to close out their regular season at Iowa next Sunday. Penn State travels to Ohio State on Friday while Iowa hosts Michigan next Friday.

Northwestern has posted shutout victories in each of its last three matches, all at home. It's the first time that the Wildcats have shut out three straight opponents since the 1994 season. Maddy Carpenter was in goal for the victories over Indiana and Central Michigan last weekend and was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts. She ranks third nationally with a 1.01 goals-against average.

The Wildcats rank first in the Big Ten in scoring margin (3.00), shutouts (6), goals-against average (1.19) and assists per game (4.00).

The offensive attack is spearheaded by Armstrong who leads the nation with 24 goals and 55 points. The native of Perth, Australia, ranks third in Big Ten history in both goals and points and is just five goals shy of 100 for her career.

    Scouting Michigan State
The Spartans (9-7, 2-2 Big Ten) have won three of their last four, including a 4-2 win at Kent State on Sunday. The lone loss during the stretch came in overtime at Michigan by a 3-2 margin. Abby Barker leads Michigan State and is tied for third in the conference with 14 goals. In goal, Molly Cassidy leads the league with an .800 save percentage and ranks second only to Carpenter with a 1.47 goals-against average. Helen Knull is in her second season as head coach.

    Scouting Missouri State
The Bears take a 4-9 record into their home match against Kent State on Friday. The team has lost its last three matchups. Hillary Lawless paces Missouri State with seven goals and 15 points. The team has been outscored 57-20 so far this season. Andrea Bain has seen the majority of the action in goal and has a 4.62 goals-against average and a .680 save percentage. Gabby Gomez Sosa is in her second season as head coach.
