EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern sophomore goalkeeper Maddy Carpenter (Wilbraham, Mass./Suffield Academy) has been honored as the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week the conference office announced Tuesday.

Carpenter helped guide the Wildcats to back-to-back shutout wins last week as NU defeated Indiana 4-0 on Friday and Central Michigan 6-0 on Sunday. She anchored a defense that allowed just one shot on goal against the Hoosiers and four against the Chippewas. NU fought off nine penalty corners against Central Michigan to earn the shutout.

Coupled with an 8-0 victory over Kent State on Oct. 7, Northwestern has shut out three straight opponents for the first time since the 1994 season. Carpenter ranks first in the Big Ten with a 1.01 goals-against average and third with a .759 save percentage.

Northwestern (14-2, 3-1 Big Ten) has won six straight contests and 13 of its last 14 heading into Friday's home match with No. 20 Michigan State. The contest gets underway at 3 p.m. at the Leonard B. Thomas Athletic Complex.
