EVANSTON, Ill. -- Winners of its last four contests and 11 of its last 12, the ninth-ranked Northwestern field hockey team returns to action this weekend as it hosts a pair of games at the Leonard B. Thomas Athletic Complex.

Tied for second place in the Big Ten standings, the Wildcats open the weekend by taking on conference foe Indiana at 3 p.m. Friday. NU steps outside of league play on Sunday as it squares off against Central Michigan at 1 p.m.

Northwestern earned a pair of wins last weekend, notching a 4-1 victory at No. 15 Michigan before returning home to defeat Kent State 8-0 on Sunday.

Tara Puffenberger and Lena Phillips were recognized by the Big Ten Conference on Tuesday for their efforts in the two wins. Puffenberger was honored as the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, while Phillips was selected as the Big Ten Freshman of the Week.

It was the second such honor for Puffenberger this season. Coupled with Chelsea Armstrong being a three-time winner, a Northwestern player has been named Big Ten Offensie Player of the Week five of the seven times it has been awarded this season. Puffenberger assisted on the game-tying goal in a 4-1 win at No. 15 Michigan before posting a hat trick in the first half of an 8-0 victory over Kent State.

Phillips tallied her first collegiate goal and was one of four different freshmen to score against Michigan. She followed up the performance with two more goals two days later vs. Kent State. Phillips joins Lisa McCarthy and Caroline Troncelliti as Northwestern recipients of the Big Ten Freshman of the Week award this season.

A trio of Wildcats rank near the top of the nation's statistical leaderboard. McCarthy ranks second nationally with 13 assists through games played Monday. Northwestern has two players in the top 10 in goals scored. Armstrong is third with 20 goals, while Puffenberger ranks tied for eighth with 13 scores. In addition, Armstrong is third in the nation with 46 points and Puffenberger is ninth with 34.
