EVANSTON, Ill. -
Junior Tara Puffenberger (Dallas, Pa./Dallas) and freshman Lena Phillips (Bethlehem, Pa./Emmaus) of the Northwestern field hockey team were recognized by the Big Ten Conference on Tuesday. Puffenberger was honored as the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, while Phillips was selected as the Big Ten Freshman of the Week.
Both players helped the Wildcats to a pair of wins last week as they posted a 4-1 victory at No. 15 Michigan on Friday as well as an 8-0 triumph over Kent State on Sunday.
Puffenberger earned her second such honor of the season. Coupled with three-time honoree Chelesa Armstrong, NU has had a player earn the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honor five of the seven times it has been awarded this year.
Puffenberger assisted on the game-tying goal in the victory over the Wolverines before posting a hat trick in the first half of the win against the Golden Flashes. She ranks third in the Big Ten this season with 13 goals and 34 points.
Phillips tallied her first collegiate goal and was one of four different freshmen to score against Michigan. She followed up the performance with two more goals two days later vs. Kent State.
Northwestern (12-2, 2-1 Big Ten) is ranked No. 9 in this week's NFHCA poll and returns to action at 3 p.m. Friday when it hosts Indiana. The Wildcats also host Central Michigan at 1 p.m. Sunday.
