EVANSTON, Ill. -
A 5-4 overtime win for the Northwestern field hockey team has resulted in a pair of Wildcats picking up player of the week honors from the Big Ten Conference. Senior Chelsea Armstrong (Perth, Australia/Penrhos) was recognized as the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week for the third time this season, while Lisa McCarthy (Dublin, Ireland/Mount Anville) was honored as the Freshman of the Week for the second time in 2012.
It is the 13th time in her career that Armstrong has earned the award. She scored three goals on just four shots in the win over the Nittany Lions. With the Wildcats down by a goal with 13 minutes left, Armstrong scored off a penalty corner to tie the game. The Nittany Lions reclaimed the lead, but Armstrong scored once again off a penalty corner with 6:33 remaining to make it a 4-4 game.
In overtime, Armstrong completed the hat trick by scoring 12 seconds into the extra session to give the Wildcats their fifth win over a ranked opponent this season. Armstrong moved into third place in Big Ten history in both goals (90) and points (215) in the contest.
McCarthy tallied a goal and two assists in the second half of the victory. With the Wildcats trailing by two goals, McCarthy's goal got NU within one before her assist on Armstrong's goal tied the match. After Penn State reclaimed the lead, McCarthy assisted on another goal by Armstrong to help force overtime.
McCarthy is tied for the Big Ten lead and fourth in the nation with 10 assists this season.
Northwestern (10-2, 1-1 Big Ten) moved up one spot to No. 9 in this week's NFHCA poll heading into Friday's conference matchup at 15th-ranked Michigan. The Wildcats return home Sunday to take on Kent State in a contest that gets underway at noon.
