EVANSTON, Ill. -
For the second consecutive week, members of the Northwestern field hockey team have been recognized as the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week as Tara Puffenberger and Lisa McCarthy, respectively, have earned the honors.
A week ago, Chelsea Armstrong was tabbed the Offensive Player of the Week, while Caroline Troncelliti was the Freshman of the Week.
Both Puffenberger and McCarthy were recognized for their efforts in the Wildcats' 4-2 victory at No. 9 Duke on Sunday.
Puffenberger, a native of Dallas, Pa., tallied Northwestern's first goal of the match before assisting on Kaylee Pohlmeyer's goal with 33 seconds remaining in the opening half to give NU a 2-0 lead at the break. She ranks second on the team and tied for third in the Big Ten with six goals. Puffenberger is also second in the Big Ten as well as on the squad with 15 points.
McCarthy played a key role in the Wildcats extending their advantage to 4-0 as she took the penalty corner that set up the third goal of the match and then scored off a rebound following another penalty corner. It was the first collegiate goal for the native of Dublin, Ireland. She leads the team and is tied for fourth in the Big Ten with four assists.
Northwestern is ranked No. 10 in this week's NFHCA coaches poll heading into a contest at No. 13 Wake Forest on Tuesday, prior to Saturday's home-opener against Ball State.
