EVANSTON, Ill. -
Northwestern junior goalkeeper Maddy Carpenter (Wilbraham, Mass./Suffield Academy) has been named the Big Ten Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week, while midfielder Isabel Flens (Hattem, Netherlands/Gymnasium Celeanum) has been recognized as the league's Freshman of the Week the conference office announced Tuesday.
The honor is the fourth weekly award of Carpenter's career, including her second defensive honor. She was previously recognized as Defensive Player of the Week Oct. 16, 2012. Flens' honor is her first.
The duo teamed up to help lead the Wildcats, ranked No. 12 in this week's NFHCA poll, to a pair of victories as they defeated No. 16 Boston University 4-1 on Saturday and Miami (Ohio) 3-0 on Monday.
Carpenter made four saves and allowed just the one goal in Saturday's win over the Terriers. She then made a pair of stops in earning her second shutout over a three-match span in Monday's victory against the RedHawks. Carpenter entered action Tuesday with a Big Ten-leading 1.27 goals-against average after leading the conference in the category a year ago.
Flens tallied a goal in both of Northwestern's triumphs. Her goal against BU was the first of her collegiate career before following it up with another that gave the 'Cats a two-goal lead early in the second half against Miami. Her six points (2g, 2a) lead all Big Ten freshmen in the early stages of the season.
Northwestern (4-1), winners of four straight, returns to action at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Ball State before hosting California and Ohio on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
