EVANSTON, Ill. - The Big Ten Conference announced its 2014 Field Hockey Players to Watch List on Thursday and the list includes senior Maddy Carpenter and juniors Lisa McCarthy and Charlotte Martin.

The trio helped lead Northwestern to a share of the Big Ten regular season title last season, the program's first since 1994.

Carpenter, a native of Wilbraham, Mass., started all 20 of the team's matches a year ago and led the Big Ten with a 1.14 goals-against average, a mark that helped Northwestern rank fifth nationally in the category. Her .709 save percentage was the second-best mark in the conference.

A native of Dublin, Ireland, McCarthy played directly in front of Carpenter in the back and played a huge role in the Wildcats' defensive success. The 2012 Big Ten Freshmen of the Year, McCarthy is a two-time second-team All-Big Ten selection. She was a second-team All-West Region pick as a freshmen before being tabbed to the first team in 2013. Her 18 assists as a freshmen led the Big Ten before posting a team-leading nine assists a year ago.

Martin is yet another key member of Northwestern's stellar defense in the midfield. The St. Louis, Mo., native is a steady defender who was named to the Big Ten all-tournament team in 2012.

Northwestern is set to play a home exhibition game at 11 a.m. Saturday vs. the Chicago club team at Lakeside Field. The Wildcats open their 2014 regular season Friday, Aug. 29 at Boston University.
