EVANSTON, Ill. -
Two Northwestern student-athletes who plan to continue their education at a graduate degree program were awarded the Big Ten Postgraduate Scholarship.
Two student-athletes from each of the 12 Big Ten institutions each were awarded a $7,500 scholarship, based primarily on academic achievements.
Maria Kovalchuk of the 2013 Big Ten champion field hockey team and Dan Tyson of the baseball team are Northwestern's two recipients. In order to receive a postgraduate scholarship from the Big Ten, student-athletes must have maintained at least a 3.2 grade-point-average, demonstrated leadership qualities, served as an excellent role model and intended to continue their academic work beyond a baccalaureate degree.
Kovalchuk, a native of Pittsburgh, Pa., was a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree during her tenure at Northwestern. She was also a three-time NFHCA National Academic Squad honoree and a two-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar.
Tyson, who came to Evanston from San Diego, Calif., is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection. He is expected to join that group for a third time upon the conclusion of the 2014 campaign.
Kovalchuk majored in classics at Northwestern, while Tyson studied economics.
The scholarship will be used to pay expenses of the student's postgraduate education to include such related activities as research and teaching, as well as other expenses such as tuition, fees, room and board, required course-related supplies and books. In order to retain the scholarship, the recipient must be accepted into a full-time graduate degree program within three years from the fall semester after selection.
