EVANSTON, Ill. -- Second-seeded Northwestern's late rally fell just short as the Wildcats were eliminated from the 2013 Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament Thursday afternoon, falling 3-2 to host and seventh-seeded Ohio State.

With the loss, the Wildcats must await their NCAA tournament fate in the hopes of receiving an at-large bid to the 16-team field. The tournament field is slated to be announced at 9 p.m. Central time Sunday.

NU and Ohio State were squaring off for the second consecutive game as the 'Cats posted a 5-0 home win over the Buckeyes in Evanston last Friday in the regular-season finale for both squads. Thursday's matchup was a different story, however.

The hosts controlled possession throughout the opening minutes of the first half and their efforts paid off at 15:06 as Peanut Johnson deflected in a shot off an assist from Nina Laudahn, giving OSU the early advantage.

Meanwhile, Northwestern struggled to get an offensive attack going as it was limited to just two shots over the opening 24 minutes of the stanza. The Wildcats did record three shots on goal over the final 11 minutes of the half, but Sarah Lemieux was up to the task on each occasion.

NU remained just a single goal down heading into the second half, but the Buckeyes tallied an insurance goal 5:28 into the period when Brooke Hiltz scored off Johnson's assist, making it 2-0 in Ohio State's favor.

Things looked even more bleak for the Wildcats when OSU scored another goal, this time off a penalty corner, with just under 19 minutes remaining to stretch its advantage to three. Mona Frommhold was credited with the goal with Maria Swartz and Laudahn assisting on the play.

Northwestern called an ensuing timeout to try to gather itself and the Wildcats responded with a late rally. With just over 10 minutes left, NU earned a corner and inserter Lisa McCarthy was able to jump in the play and tip home a shot past Lemieux, cutting the deficit to 3-1.

The 'Cats continued to mount pressure and it paid off again with 5:19 remaining as Dominique Masters knocked home a corner for her eighth goal of the year to get Northwestern within a single goal.

With two minutes to go, NU earned yet another corner and came within inches of tying the match. Masters mis-hit her shot, but the ball bounced in front of a prone Lemieux and nearly over her, but she got just enough of the ball to prevent it from going into the goal for the tying score. Northwestern earned another ensuing corner was unable to convert as Ohio State held on for the upset.

The Wildcats finished the contest with an 11-8 edge in shots and a 7-3 advantage in corners. Maddy Carpenter made one save for Northwestern while Lemieux stopped five shots for the Buckeyes.
