IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Ninth-ranked Northwestern dominated the action, but Indiana took full advantage of each of its opportunities as the Hoosiers eliminated the Wildcats from the Big Ten tournament 4-0 Thursday afternoon at Grant Field.
NU posted advantages of 17-6 in shots and 9-1 in penalty corners in the contest, but was never able to break through.
Northwestern dominated possession through the opening half of the first stanza, but it was unable to convert as Indiana packed in defensively and the Wildcats were unable to get by the last line.
It was the Hoosiers who were able to score first as an NU turnover in the back resulted in Morgan Fleetwood finding Nicole Volgraf for a goal at the 18:41 mark.
The goal put the Wildcats on their heels and other defensive turnover turned into another tally as Mariella Grote made it 2-0 Indiana at 26:27, forcing Northwestern to use a timeout.
The Hoosiers would take the 2-0 advantage into the break.
As it started the first half, NU came out the aggressors to begin the second period. Caroline Troncelliti found herself alone in front of the cage just under five minutes into the period, but her shot barely went wide.
The Wildcats then earned back-to-back corners two minutes later, but Armstrong had a shot saved and then another blocked. Meanwhile, Indiana had just one corner in the entire contest, but it took advantage of the opportunity as Fleetwood scored to make it a three-goal game at 45:36.
NU kept the pressure on in an attempt to get back in the game, but was never able to dent the scoreboard.
Indiana would get one final score at 60:28 when Fleetwood's cross found Grote all alone in front for a goal to put the game out of the Wildcats' reach.
Northwestern's NCAA tournament fate will be determined Tuesday, Nov. 6 when the field of 16 teams is announced at 7 p.m. on NCAA.com.
