LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- No. 11 Northwestern fired 10 shots on goal but wasn't able to break through for a score as the Wildcats fell to No. 17 Louisville at Trager Stadium Sunday afternoon.
NU held a 13-6 advantage in shots in the contest, including 10-4 in shots on goal, but was unable to knock a tally past Cardinals goalkeeper Sydney King. Tara Puffenberger posted a game-high six shots for Northwestern.
The hosts notched an early goal at 7:05 as Becca Maddock scored off a rebound of Alyssa Voelmle's initial shot following a penalty corner.
The Wildcats earned three consecutive corners of their own during one first-half stretch but didn't manage to cash in. Northwestern had five total corners over the opening 35 minutes of play while Louisville converted on its only attempt.
NU dominated possession throughout the second half as it sought the equalizer. The 'Cats fired seven shots on goal after the break but King made a stop each time while knocking multiple other opportunities in the circle for Northwestern out of harms way.
Louisville posted an important insurance goal with just under 15 minutes left as Victoria Stratton scored on a penalty corner with Paige Monsen and Erin Schneidtmiller being credited with assists on the play.
Northwestern returns to action Saturday as it returns to Big Ten play at Michigan State. The contest is slated for a noon Central time start.
