EVANSTON, Ill. -- Junior Elizabeth Dobbs and senior Alexandra Quinn both scored goals for Northwestern but the ’Cats fell to No. 14 American, 5-2, in their second game at the Terrapin Invitational on Saturday in College Park, Md. Quinn has now scored at least one goal in each of Northwestern’s last four games and has already matched her goal-scoring total from a year ago with six.

Both teams generated 11 shots on net, with NU senior goalkeeper Emily Kyle making five saves in the loss. Junior Courtney Plaster-Strange led the way for Northwestern with three shots.

American jumped out to a 1-0 lead four minutes into the contest when Irene Schickhardt deflected a shot past Kyle. Over the next 12 minutes, Christine Fingeruth gave the Eagles a three-goal cushion with back-to-back goals, first when she hit a one-timer off a pass from Savannah Graybill, followed by a high shot over the shoulder of Kyle at the 15:59 mark.

After Graybill made it 4-0 in American’s favor, Dobbs got one back for the ’Cats when she slammed home a rebound off one of NU’s three penalty corners on the day to make it a 4-1 game at halftime. It was Dobbs’ second goal in 2008.

Quinn pulled Northwestern to within two when she dribbled around AU goalie Alyssa Poorman and slotted it in the net to keep her scoring streak alive.

NU would get no closer, however, as American answered less than a minute later with a goal off a penalty corner.

Sunday Northwestern takes on host Maryland, the No. 1-ranked team in the nation. Maryland was upset on Saturday by No. 7 Syracuse, falling by a 2-1 count on its home field.
