EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 11 Northwestern rode the strength of two goals in the opening five minutes of play en route to a 4-1 victory in its 2013 home opener against No. 16 Boston University Saturday afternoon.

The Wildcats jumped on the Terriers right out of the gates as Isabel Flens had her shot saved by Valentina Cerda Eimbcke but the rebound went right to Tara Puffenberger who found the back of the cage just 1:32 into the match to give the hosts the lead.

Two minutes later, NU earned a penalty corner and Dominique Masters and Nikki Parsley had their shots saved, but Lisa McCarthy was waiting on the doorstep to fire the third shot home, giving the 'Cats a 2-0 lead just over four minutes into the match.

Northwestern maintained the advantage throughout the opening 35 minutes of play as they held a commanding 11-3 edge in shots at the intermission.

BU got back into the contest four minutes into the second period as it cut the Wildcats' lead in half. Following a penalty corner, Sofi Laurito put home a rebound following an initial shot to get the Terriers within 2-1.

The lead remained precarious until 20 minutes remained when sophomore Kelsey Gradwohl fired a shot from just inside the circle for her first career goal, giving NU a two-goal cushion once again.

The 'Cats got one more score at 58:46 as Puffenberger drove the end line and fed a pass across the goal to Flens who knocked home the first goal of her career to account for the final margin.

Northwestern finished with an 18-7 advantage in shots and a 5-4 edge in penalty corners. Maddy Carpenter made four saves to earn the victory in goal.

Northwestern returns to action at noon Monday as it takes on Miami (Ohio) at Lakeside Field.
