BERKELEY, Calif. -- Tara Puffenberger and Chelsea Armstrong each tallied two goals as No. 20 Northwestern fought off a slow start to wrap up a perfect road trip to California by recording a 5-2 victory over UC Davis on Monday afternoon.
The Wildcats also posted wins over No. 11 Stanford, No. 16 California and Pacific on their trip to the Golden State.
"We struggled early today, but played a much better second half," Northwestern head coach Tracey Fuchs said. "Overall, I am very pleased to leave California 4-0. We now need to rest up and get ready to battle Duke and Wake Forest."
Playing for the second straight day, NU struggled out of the gates as the Aggies struck first on a goal by Cloey LemMon at the 23:51 mark.
Puffenberger would get the 'Cats back to even at 29:39 when she scored an unassisted goal, helping tie the game 1-1 at the half. Northwestern was out-shot 7-5 by the Aggies over the opening 35 minutes of play before the Wildcats dominated the second stanza.
NU took 22 shots in the second half to just five for UC Davis and the Wildcats posted a 12-2 advantage in penalty corners.
However, the efforts didn't pay off until eight minutes remained when freshman Caroline Troncelliti scored on a penalty corner off an assist by Armstrong. The Aggies had the answer just over a minute later, though, tying the match 2-2 on Emily Mecke's goal with 6:09 left.
The scoring spree continued with 4:45 to go when Armstrong tallied her first of the match to put NU back in front by a goal with Troncelliti assisting on the play. Puffenberger gave Northwestern a much-needed insurance goal a little over a minute later as her second tally of the game off Catherine Franklin's assist made it 4-2.
The Wildcats would get one final score with no time remaining when Armstrong posted her second goal of the afternoon, converting a penalty corner from Lisa McCarthy
Northwestern finished with a season-high 27 shots in the contest to 12 for UC Davis. The 'Cats also had a pivotal 13-4 edge in penalty corners.
Maddy Carpenter picked up the win in goal for NU, recording five saves.
Northwestern returns to action on the road on Sunday as it travels to fifth-ranked Duke. The contest gets underway at noon Central time.
