BERKELEY, Calif. -- No. 20 Northwestern posted its second consecutive victory over a ranked opponent to open its four-game trip in the state of California as the Wildcats topped No. 16 Cal 1-0 Friday afternoon.

Senior Chelsea Armstrong, Northwestern's all-time leading scorer, posted the lone goal of the match with just 42 seconds remaining in regulation as she got one past Bears keeper Joelle van Hoorn. Kaylee Pohlmeyer assisted on the goal which was the 73rd of Armstrong's career.

"We played hard for 70 minutes today," Northwestern head coach Tracey Fuchs said. "Maddy Carpenter came up big in goal and Chelsea put one home when we needed it. It was another great team effort."

The victory came on the heels of a 4-1 win at 11th-ranked Stanford on Wednesday and was the team's third straight game overall against a ranked opponent. It is the second straight year that the Wildcats have defeated ranked foes in back-to-back games, after they beat No. 11 Cal and No. 18 Virginia consecutively during the 2011 campaign.

Cal held a 6-5 edge in shots over the opening half with Carpenter and van Hoorn each coming up with four saves.

The contest appeared headed to overtime, but Pohlmeyer found Armstrong who was able to push home the game-winner in the final minute of regulation.

Carpenter finished with five saves to earn her second shutout of the season.

Northwestern continues its California road trip on Sunday as it takes on Pacific in Berkeley. The contest gets underway at 3 p.m. Central time.
