EVANSTON, Ill.-- Northwestern came into Monday's game upset-minded, but could not pull off the victory against the top-ranked team in the nation, the Maryland Terrapins, and lost by a score of 6-0 at Lakeside Field.

Terrapin freshman Katie O'Donnell added to the brilliant start to her career by piling on two more goals and an assist to her total of two goals and two assists in the season opener against Central Michigan.

While under fire the entire game, junior goalkeeper Emily Kyle (San Francisco, Calif./San Francisco University High School) was able to stop 11 shots and only allowed one direct goal from Maryland's 10 penalty corners.

Seniors Christina Foley (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth) and Katie Charles (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) and juniors Alex Quinn (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) and Alison Bullock (Boyds, Md./Stone Ridge) were able to get off two shots each in the contest, but could not get it past the stingy Maryland (2-0) goalkeeper.

"The game was definitely a challenge. Maryland is definitely living up to being one of the top teams in the country" coach Kelly McCollum said. "I'm just proud that the kids continue to keep their heads high."

After falling behind 4-0 the Terps, in the first period, the `Cats (1-1) kept clawing away and forced Maryland's goalkeeper to make two brilliant second half saves. Maryland, however, added to its lead with a penalty stroke stemming from a penalty corner shortly after halftime and another O'Donnell goal in the 47th minute.

"We have a few things to fix for this week, but we're ready to leave this game behind and move on for what we're preparing for this weekend with Northeastern and Ball State," McCollum said.
