LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Three Wildcats registered unassisted goals to lift No. 20 Northwestern to a 3-0 victory over Miami (Ohio) in the season-opener at the Cardinal Classic in Louisville Saturday. Senior captain Chelsea Armstrong, forward Nikki Parsley and newcomer Tara Puffenberger -- all of whom were named to the Big Ten Preseason Watch List -- each found the back of the cage, while sophomore Maddy Carpenter preserved the shutout in goal.

"We worked into the game today and continued to put pressure on Miami," head coach Tracey Fuchs said. "It was a solid team effort and we need the same tomorrow against a strong Northeastern team."

Armstrong, NU's all-time leader in goals scored and in points, picked up right where she left off last season, recording the first score of the year with four minutes remaining in the opening half. She created her own opportunity, dribbling in front of the cage and blasting it past Miami's goalkeeper, Sarah Mueller.

Puffenberger and Parsley took Armstrong's lead after intermission and provided two more goals just three minutes apart midway through the second half, eliminating the RedHawks' hopes of a comeback.

Northwestern's defense limited the Redhawks to just three shots on goal and only five total shots on the afternoon. Conversely, the Wildcats peppered Mueller with 18 total shots and nine on frame. Puffenberger and Armstrong combined for 11 of the 18 attempts.

With the win, the 'Cats earned the right to face No. 21 Northeastern at noon CT Sunday. The Huskies defeated host Louisville earlier today, 3-2. Coverage for tomorrow's contest can be found by clicking accessing Gametracker Gametracker>.
