EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern's women's fencing team will be well represented at the Junior North American Cup this weekend as five freshmen Wildcats seek to win gold medals and attempt to accumulate points toward World Championship team qualification.

The Junior North American Cup is the first in a series of three competitions, in which fencers will attempt to build up enough points to qualify to participate at the 2012 USFA Junior World Championships in Moscow, Russia over the summer. The second event is the USFA North American Cup, which takes place Jan. 13-16 in Portland, Ore.; the final event is the USFA Junior National Olympics in Salt Lake City, which happen Feb. 17-20.

The Wildcats do not have anyone slated to take part in the foil event and thus will not be in action until Saturday afternoon, Nov. 12. The junior women's épée competition begins at approximately 3:30 p.m. with three 'Cats in action. Épéeists Courtney Dumas, Rose Semmel and Sonali Patel will all represent NU in Texas. Semmel edged Patel on Sunday in the semifinal bout at the Illinois Junior Olympic Qualifier, 15-14. Semmel would go on to win the gold medal, while Patel still qualified for the Junior National Olympics with a third-place finish.

The Junior North American Cup continues on Sunday when another pair of Northwestern freshmen will be in action with the sabre. Claire Carson and Mary Regan will both participate in the event. Carson placed second last weekend at the Junior Olympic Qualifier, a finish high enough to send her to Salt Lake City, as well.
