EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern continues its busy fall slate over the weekend when eight members of the fencing team will travel to Virginia Beach, Va. for the United States Fencing Association (USFA) November North American Cup. The Wildcats will place three entrants in the Division I women's foil competition on Friday, Nov. 9 and another five in the epée event scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 10 at the Virginia Beach Convention Center.
A trio of talented freshmen will lead the Wildcats into the opening day of competition when they will take part in the Division I women's foil event beginning Friday at 7 a.m. Mikela Goldstein, Charlotte Sands and Jen Yamin will all be amongst the crowded field of 121 fencers. All three NU foilists also took part in the October North American Cup (NAC) in St. Louis with Sands recording the top placement of the bunch.
The NAC continues Saturday when five more Wildcats enter the field of over 140 for the Division I women's epée event. Experienced veterans Dina Bazarbayeva, Kate Cavanaugh and Courtney Dumas will be joined in Old Dominion Saturday by newcomers Helen Foster and Haley Hart.
Bazarbayeva is coming off of a gold-medal-winning performance at last weekend's Remenyik Open, while Dumas captured a gold earlier this season at the Burton Open. The sophomore also had the best finish of any Wildcat fencer at the October NAC, where she came in eighth overall out of 151 entrants in the epée competition.
