EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern head fencing coach Laurie Schiller, owner of 1,111 career victories, has been named the 2011-12 Midwest Fencing Conference (MFC) Coach of the Year. It is the eighth time in his illustrious career that Schiller has taken home the award.

"I am humbled and honored by the Conference voting me as MFC Coach of the Year," said Schiller. "The honor belongs to my staff and all of the student-athletes for the great job that they have done. It is a wonderful exclamation point for a season that ended very well."

Schiller, in his 35th season at the program's helm, led the Wildcats to a 13th-consecutive top-10 finish at the NCAA Championships in March. The shorthanded squad rallied to finish eighth in Columbus, Ohio. All-American Kate Cavanaugh reached the semifinals of the epée event, while Dayana Sarkisova achieved All-America honors for a third straight year in foil, finishing sixth.

The 'Cats finished second overall at the 2012 MFC Championships, their best finish since 2007. Cavanaugh won the individual gold medal in epée, while the foil squad captured a gold as well. The epée squad brought home a silver medal and the sabre unit secured bronze. NU won 36 of 43 duals in 2011-12.

Under Schiller Northwestern had 10 All-MFC performers on the strips and 13 at-large Academic All-Big Ten selections in 2012.
