Kaihatsu came to Northwestern in 1989 and has worked side-by-side with head coach Laurie Schiller ever since. The duo has helped the Wildcats to 14 consecutive top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships, including a ninth-place showing this spring in San Antonio, Texas.

As a collegiate fencer himself, Kaihatsu garnered first team All-America accolades and a Big Ten championship during his final campaign in 1983 at the University of Illinois.
