EVANSTON, Ill. -- After picking up eight wins in 10 chance at the NU Duals on Feb. 1-2, the schedule does not get any easier for No. 9 Northwestern because the Wildcats will face three more highly ranked opponents on Saturday, Feb. 8 at the DeCicco Duals hosted by Notre Dame.
The Wildcats, ranked ninth in this week's CollegeFencing360.com coaches poll, will tangle with No. 2 Ohio State right out of the gate at 8 a.m. CT. The two Midwest Fencing Conference foes have seen one another once already this season, with the Buckeyes claiming a victory at the NYU Invitational on January 25.
Following a break, the 'Cats will bout against Notre Dame at 10 a.m. NU has squared off with the fourth-ranked Fighting Irish on a pair of occasions this season. The two programs hooked up in South Bend for an exhibition relay on Nov. 16, 2013 and again in New York City on Jan. 25. NU senior Dina Bazarbayeva was the top epéeist at the exhibition event, but Notre Dame won the team event on its home turf and again in the Big Apple.
Northwestern's next opponent comes at 11:30 a.m. in the form of sixth-ranked Penn State. The Wildcats have not fenced the Nittany Lions yet this season. In the last meeting between the two programs on Feb. 10, 2013, the 'Cats upset PSU at the Duke Duals, 17-10.
After the lunch break, the 'Cats will face, in order, Cleveland State (1 p.m.), Detroit (2 p.m.) and Wayne State (3 p.m.). NU has not faced any of those squads yet this season, however it owns a combined record of 130-21 all-time against the three.
