EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern is ranked seventh in the first CollegeFencing360.com coaches poll that was released by the web site Thursday. The Wildcats are up one spot from where they concluded the 2012-13 campaign.
The 'Cats are 16-0 on the season as they prepare to travel to the East Coast this weekend for a duo of important. Northwestern will be in the Big Apple on Saturday, Jan. 25 for the NYU Invitational where it will face three ranked teams and a fourth that is receiving votes. Head coach Laurie Schiller's squad opens the meet against No. 6 Columbia before facing (RV) Yale, No. 3 Notre Dame, and No. 7 Ohio State. The 'Cats will also face Wayne State and the host school, NYU, Saturday.
The slate does not get any easier when NU travels about 100 miles south for the Philadelphia Invitational on Sunday, Jan. 26. The Wildcats open against (RV) Johns Hopkins before taking on No. 9 Temple and No. 8 Penn. The weekend concludes with bouts against Cornell and Sacred Heart, both of which are also receiving votes in the coaches poll.
Princeton, which finished second in the final version of the poll last season, checks in as the top-ranked team in 2014. The Wildcats will get their first crack at the Tigers on Sunday, Feb. 2 at the NU Duals, which are held at the Henry Crown Sports Pavilion on the Evanston campus.
