EVANSTON, Ill. -- Nine members Northwestern fencing team will travel to Virginia Beach, Va. this weekend to take part in the United States Fencing Association (USFA) January North American Cup.
The competition opens Friday, Jan. 17 at the Virginia Beach Convention Center and continues over the weekend before wrapping up on Monday, Jan. 20. The first Wildcat to hit the strips will be freshman Mandeep Bhinder in the junior women's epée event on Friday morning. Check-in takes place form 6-7 a.m. CT with fencing slated to begin between 7:30-8 a.m.
On Saturday, Jan. 18, both the Division I women's sabre and junior women's foil events will take place at the convention center. Sabre check-in for Julia Abelsky, Alisha Gomez-Shah and Cindy Oh begins a7 6 a.m. CT with fencing slated to commence between 7:30-8 a.m. Later, a group of four NU newcomers will compete in the junior women's foil event, including: Stephanie Chan, Kimmy Fishman, Kayla Kelch and Stella Pointeau.
Like Friday, there is only one event on Northwestern's agenda on Sunday, Jan. 19. Bhinder will join 2013 NCAA All-American Courtney Dumas
in the field for the Division I women's epée event. The competition on Sunday will begin between 7:30-8 a.m.
Finally on Monday, Jan. 20, six 'Cats will be in action a second time. The Division I women's foil kicks off the action in the morning with Chan, Fishman and Kelch all registered to fence. Later that afternoon, Abelsky, Gomez and Oh will close out the weekend in the junior women's sabre event.
Results from all six events will be available here throughout the USFA North American Cup.
