EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Northwestern women's fencing team hosted the 1998 Midwest Fencing Regional Championships Saturday in Welsh-Ryan Arena and turned in some impressive performances. The competition determines the qualifiers for the NCAA Championships and no team scores are kept. Michelle Schaffner, the captain of the epee squad, all but guaranteed herself a spot in this month's NCAA Championships with a fifth-place finish. She finished the day with a 13-6 record. Also turning in a solid effort in the epee was Meghan Gaseor. Seeded tenth, she finished in eighth place after winning seven of her first nine bouts. In the foil, co-captain Tiffany Groth was the top NU finisher with her seventh place finish. She posted nine wins on the day. Kim Boudreau and Robin Stark finished in tenth and eleventh, respectively, and Rosa Lin was 13th. Boudreau had six wins and Stark five. NU freshman Carly Wells won the sabre with teammate Vivian Imaizumi taking second. Fellow Wildcats Adi Hermoni and Margaret Magnarelli were fifth and sixth.
