EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern opened its 2012-13 dual slate in fine fashion Friday night with convincing victories over Swarthmore, Florida and Chicago on the first night of the annual NU Duals at Patten Gymnasium.
The Wildcats began the evening by facing Swarthmore. Both the epée and foil squads went undefeated, while the new-look sabre unit dropped only one bout as Northwestern cruised to a 26-1 triumph.
For the foil team, Mary Spohn, Tina Umanskiy and Jen Yamin all won twice in the opening round, while Sally Park, Mikela Goldstein and Charlotte Sands also picked up victories.
Veterans Dina Bazarbayeva, Courtney Dumas and Kendrick Mooney led the epée team with victories in the first two rounds, while Juliana Barrett, Haley Hart and Kaitlyn Wallace also were triumphant.
Team captain Alicia Gurrieri anchored the sabre team with two wins, while sophomore Sarah Bruhl, who converted to fence sabre this season, also won two bouts, as did freshman Cara Franke, who all three.
Northwestern blanked Florida in round two, 27-0. Senior Chloe Grainger
made her 2012-13 debut against the Gators with two shutout victories with the sabre.
The night's final round saw the 'Cats square off against nearby rival University of Chicago. The foil team continued its unbeaten streak through the evening, but the Maroons were able to pick up one win in both epée and sabre.
Three freshmen, Yamin, Goldstein and Sands, combined to earn all nine foil wins against Chicago.
The NU Duals continue Saturday, Nov. 17 at Patten beginning at 8 a.m. The Wildcats will be in action all day until approximately 3 p.m.
