PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Northwestern got the dual meet portion of its 2009-10 schedule off to a strong start, posting a perfect 4-0 record at the Stanford Duals. The Wildcats notched a pair of perfect bouts, defeating both Detroit-Mercy and Cal Tech 27-0 while also toppling host Stanford 18-9 and finishing the day with a 23-4 decision over UC San Diego.

The Wildcats' foil squad continues to be arguably the team's strongest weapon, combining for a 34-2 mark on the afternoon. Neither senior Meredith Baskies (Lynnfield, Mass./Boston University Academy) or freshman Dayana Sarkisova (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) dropped a bout on the day, with Sarkisova posting a 10-0 record in her collegiate dual debut and Baskies finishing at 8-0. The sophomore duo of Devynn Patterson (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) and Camille Provencal (St. Paul, Minn./Central) both ended the afternoon with 8-1 records.

Northwestern's sabre squad was equally impressive as well, finishing 32-4 against the quartet of opponents with a pair of 9-0 performances. Freshman Chole Grainger (Decatur, Ga./Decatur) anchored the squad with a perfect 10-0 mark in her collegiate dual debut, with senior Whitney White (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) going 9-1 and freshman Alicia Gurrieri (Medford, N.J./Moorestown Friends) finishing 6-1. Senior Allie Keller (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle Regional) posted a 7-2 record for the day as well.

The epee squad got off to a rocky start, dropping a 3-6 decision to host Stanford in the opening bout, but recovered nicely to win 26 of the next 27 matches and finished with a 29-7 mark. Senior sisters Christa French (Southlake, Texas/Carroll) and Kayley French (Southlake, Texas/Carroll) both ended the day with 8-2 overall records, followed by fellow senior Joanna Niklinska's (Granger, Ind./Penn) 8-3 mark. Senior Sarah Henning (New Berlin, Wis./Catholic Memorial) also posted a 3-0 record against Cal Tech.

Head coach Laurie Schiller now moves even closer to his exclusive 1,000th career victory, sitting at 993-412. Schiller's milestone will have to wait, however, as he and the rest of the Wildcats return to open competition this weekend, traveling to University Park, Pa., for the Penn State Open this Saturday, Nov. 21.
