Cleveland Convention Center Cleveland, Ohio
CLEVELAND -- Northwestern wrapped up its stint at the Cleveland Convention Center Sunday as the Wildcats finished Division I competition at the United States Fencing Association (USFA) November North American Cup (NAC).
The top squad for the Wildcats over the weekend was the epée group, which turned in three top-16 finishes in a deep field of 170 competitors in the Division I women's epée. Cleveland native Courtney Dumas placed 14th, one spot ahead of senior captain Dina Bazarbayeva, who was 15th overall. Sophomore standout Juliana Barrett followed Bazarbayeva with a 16th-place finish Saturday.
Dumas won five of six pool bouts, while Bazarbayeva won four and Barrett picked up two wins. Dumas scored a pair of two-point victories in the direct elimination tournament before falling to Courtney Hurley in the repechage from 32. Hurley went on to win a bronze medal and Dumas rebounded to defeat Rebecca Chimahusky, 15-10, to finish her NAC.
Bazarbayeva also fought her way in the repechage. Northwestern's lone senior won her battle in the round of 32 against Natalie Vie, 15-13, before falling to Lauren Willock. Barrett was eliminated Saturday by Notre Dame's Ashley Severson, who finished seventh.
Northwestern's sabre squad was in action on Sunday at the Cleveland Convention Center. Freshman Alisha Gomez-Shah continued the great start to her collegiate career by finishing 46th overall in the Division I women's sabre event. Fellow newcomer Cindy Oh was also in the top half of the field Sunday.
In the Division I Women's Foil competition, sophomore Jen Yamin led the Wildcats with a 17th-place finish, while classmate Charlotte Sands checked in at 23rd.
