USFA November North American Cup
Cleveland Convention Center Cleveland, Ohio
CLEVELAND -- Day one of the United States Fencing Association (USFA) November North American Cup (NAC), held at the Cleveland Convention Center in Ohio, is in the books. Nine Northwestern fencers competed Friday in the Division I Women's Foil competition.
Sophomore Jen Yamin led the Wildcats with a 17th-place finish, while classmate Charlotte Sands, junior captain Mary Spohn and sophomore Mikela Goldstein also finished in the top half of the talented field.
Yamin won all six of her bouts in pool five Friday to earn the fifth seed in the direct elimination (DE) portion of the event. The Allendale, N.J., native had a first-round bye before knocking off Jenny Zhao, 15-12, in the round of 64. The sophomore was knocked out of the NAC in the next round by Ann Marsh-Senic.
Sands finished second in her pool with a 5-1 record, earning her the 25th seed in direct elimination. Like Yamin, Sands had a bye and won her first DE bout against Amanda Lalezarian, 15-10. Also like Yamin, Sands was ousted in the round of 32, falling to the eventual bronze medalist, Eleanor Harvey.
Spohn, who was the most experienced Wildcat to see action on the day, finished 39th, while Goldstein placed 57th overall. One other junior fencer, Katherine Kim, and a quartet of newcomers - Stephanie Chan, Kayla Kelch, Kimmy Fishman and Sarit Kapon - also competed for Northwestern on Friday. The event is slated to begin at 7 a.m. CT.
The Division I Women's Sabre event will be held on Sunday, Nov. 10.
