2009 Remenyik Open Final Results
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Senior Joanna Niklinska (Granger, Ind./Penn) and freshman Alicia Gurrieri (Medford, N.J.) highlighted a successful weekend for Northwestern at the 2009 USFA Remenyik Open, capturing the gold medal in the epée and sabre divisions. In all, 13 Wildcats posted top-10 finishes, topping the 11 from the 2008 Remenyik.
Niklinska swept through the 62-competitor field, posting an 11-0 record during the two-day event at the Sports and Aquatic Center while attaining her A-rating. She was one of five Wildcats to finish among the top-10 in the women's epée as senior Christa French (Southlake, Texas/Carroll) finishing in a tie for third and senior Kayley French (Southlake, Texas/Carroll) placing fifth. Freshman Kara Collins (Houston, Texas) and senior Sarah Henning (New Berlin, Wis./Catholic Memorial) rounded out NU's top-10 finishers, placing sixth and 10th respectively.
In the women's sabre, Gurrieri followed up her third place finish at the USFA Burton with gold at the Remenyik, holding off 31 competitors in the women's sabre to achieve her A-rating with an 11-0 performance. Fellow freshman Chloe Grainger (Decatur, Ga.) finished fifth while senior Allie Keller (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle Regional) placed sixth. Senior Whitney White (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) finished 10th as well for the Wildcats.
Four Northwestern fencers placed among the top-10 in the women's foil, led by freshman Dayana Sarkasova's
(Grand Rapids, Mich.) runner-up finish. Sophomore Devynn Patterson
(Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) placed sixth, with fellow sophomore Camille Provencal
(St. Paul, Minn./Central) finishing eighth and freshman Emily Bruhl
(Fairfield, Conn.) placing 10th.
Northwestern returns to the strip this Friday, Oct. 23, for its annual Homecoming Event at Patten Gymnasiu at 7 p.m. The 'Cats will then host the USFA Illinois Junior Qualifier at SPAC on Sunday, Nov. 1.
