    NCAA Championship Results Get Acrobat Reader

    COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Five Northwestern fencers wrapped up the first day of competition at the 2012 NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio Thursday. After four rounds of competition, the Wildcats sit ninth in the team standings, while two individuals are in the top three in their respective weapons.

    Epée fencer Kate Cavanaugh enjoyed the most success for the 'Cats Thursday. The junior squad captain sits in second place out of 24 fencers with 13 victories through four rounds of the competition. Cavanaugh tied Penn State's Margherita Guzzi Vincenti for the most epée wins Thursday.

    Courtney Dumas is also in the epée field representing Northwestern. The freshman is currently in 18th place after day one. Dumas has won five bouts so far in her first NCAA Championship.

    Two-time All-American Dayana Sarkisova is in third place in foil after four rounds. Sarkisova was victorious 11 times, though she did not face Mona Shaito of Ohio State, who is currently in first place with 14 wins, nor did she fence against Luona Wang of Penn, who is in second with 12 wins.

    Senior Devynn Patterson, who qualified for the NCAA Championships for a fourth straight time, is currently in 21st place overall in the foil field. Patterson won four bouts through four rounds on the day.

    The Wildcats entered one fencer in sabre this weekend. Chloe Grainger won three times in the early going, but has been forced to withdraw from the competition because of an injury.

    The 2012 NCAA Championships resume Friday morning at 8:30 a.m. Central time with rounds five through seven. The women's semifinals and championship bouts will begin at approximately 12:45 p.m. Those bouts can be seen live on, which can be accessed through the link above.
