COLUMBUS, Ohio. -- Eighth-ranked Northwestern wrapped up the two-day 2014 NCAA Championships Friday afternoon at St. John Arena in Columbus, Ohio. The Wildcats finished 10th in the team standings with 35 points, marking the 15th consecutive season that head coach Laurie Schiller has guided the program to a top-10 finish among all women's teams.
Northwestern's lone senior, Dina Bazarbayeva, was the highest individual finisher among the five Wildcats that trekked to Ohio State's campus. The two-time All-America epée fencer finished 15th overall in her weapon with 10 victories in 23 bouts, including a 5-3 victory over Princeton's Katherine Holmes who finished seventh overall Friday.
In her third straight NCAA appearance, Bazarbayeva's teammate, Courtney Dumas, finished 20th in epée with nine victories to her credit, including a 5-4 win over Bazarbayeva and a 5-3 decision over semifinalist Jessie Radinovich of Penn State who finished tied for third with Princeton's Susannah Scanlan.
Freshman sabre fencer Alisha Gomez-Shah made the most of her inaugural national championship appearance by posting the highest individual finish of the three NU newcomers in action at Ohio State. The Wayne, N.J. , native posted eight victories over two days, enough to finish 18th among the country's top competitors. One of Gomez-Shah's wins came against semifinalist Gracie Stone of Princeton in convincing fashion, 5-2.
Fellow freshman sabre fencer Julia Abelsky led the Wildcats in victories during the regular season and she added four more at the NCAA Championships.
Finally, sophomore Jen Yamin qualified for her first NCAA Championship in foil and the sophomore also picked up four victories in Columbus.
