SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Northwestern dominated five of its six foes Saturday, but it could not solve one of its biggest rivals on the strips. The Wildcats won five dual matches at the Notre Dame Duals, falling only to the host Fighting Irish.

Northwestern (39-8) cruised through its first two rounds at the Castellan Family Fencing Center Saturday by defeating Lawrence and Detroit by a combined score of 47-7. NU's foil squad won all 18 of its decisions to open the day.

The second match of the season against Air Force proved to be even tighter than the first. The Wildcats lost epée, 6-3, but convincing 7-2 and 9-0 triumphs in foil and sabre, respectively provided enough cushion to win the match, 19-8.

Following a 25-2 domination of Wayne State in which both the epée and sabre squads went unbeaten, it was time for Northwestern to face down Notre Dame.

Unfortunately for the 'Cats, the Fighting Irish had their number once again. Northwestern fell, 21-6, in its only loss of the day. Both the foil and sabre sqauds accounted for three victories apiece in defeat.

NU wrapped up its brief stay in South Bend with a 25-2 trouncing of Cleveland State.

The Wildcats will continue their weekend at the U.S. Collegiate Squad Championships in Columbus, Ohio on Sunday. Northwestern's epée and sabre squads are both seeded third and will open the competition at 9 a.m. against Sacred Heart and NYU, respectively. The Wildcats foil squad is seeded second overall and, after a first-round bye, will fence against Penn at 10:30 a.m.
