Junior Olympic Championship Results
BALTIMORE, Md.-- One day after their teammates won a gold medal in junior team women's foil, one of Northwestern's two entries in the junior team women's epée event claimed a bronze medal at the Junior Olympic Championships in Baltimore, Md.
Courtney Dumas, Haley Hart and Kaitlyn Wallace formed NU's Purple squad Sunday. The trio crushed Vertical Rise in the opening match, 45-8, before toppling Fortune Fencing 1, 45-34, in the round of 16. The winning continued for Northwestern in the quarterfinals with a seven-point win over NYAC.
The Wildcats were finally tripped up by Alliance Team 1 in the semifinals, 45-30. The Purple Squad rebounded to win a thrilling match against Medeo in a fence-off for third place, 45-44, to secure the bronze medal. Northwestern came from behind in the contest to go ahead in the last round. Dumas eventually sealed the one-point triumph in overtime in the Charm City.
Northwestern's other entry, the White Squad comprised of Helen Foster, Olivia Lim and Charlotte Sands, placed 14th overall in the field of 28 teams. The 'Cats knocked off a team from the Denver Fencing Center, 45-28, in the first round before falling to the same NYAC team that the Purple team would later eliminate.
The Wildcats will reconvene as a team on Saturday, Feb. 23 for the Notre Dame Duals in South Bend, Ind.
