EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 7 Northwestern wrapped up its annual home meet Sunday with three more wins to turn in an impressive 8-2 mark for the weekend. The Wildcats topped Fairleigh Dickinson, North Carolina and Lawrence, but fell to top-ranked Princeton in a competitive clash.
In the first round of the day, NU (31-6) cruised past FDU, 22-5. Both the sabre and epée squads notched 8-1 victories, while the Wildcats' foil squad won six of its nine bouts. Six Northwestern fencers went unbeaten in the round; Julie Abelsky, Cindy Oh, Sarit Kapon, Mandeep Bhinder, Christina Allen and Juliana Barrett were undefeated in the early going for the 'Cats.
The second round saw Northwestern take on North Carolina. The Wildcats were met with little resistance once again en route to a 21-6 triumph. Epée won all nine bouts; foil won seven bouts; sabre was victorious five times. Sophomores Mikela Goldstein and Jen Yamin each won three times in the foil round, while Dina Bazarbayeva, Courtney Dumas and Barrett all did the same in epée.
After downing the Tar Heels, NU was tasked with trying to take down No. 1 Princeton. The Tigers stood to the challenge and knocked off the Wildcats, 22-5, handing Northwestern its first and only loss of the day.
The Wildcats roared back in their final round of the day to topple Lawrence with ease, 24-3. Cara Franke, Oh and Abelsky combined to post a 9-0 victory in sabre. Sarah Bruhl and Stella Pointeau both won three foil bouts and Bhinder won three times in epée for Northwestern.
NU finished with an overall mark of 8-2 at the home meet this weekend. The 'Cats won the eight matches by a combined score of 165-56. The losses came against No. 8 Penn (14-13) and No. 1 Princeton. Northwestern will return to the strips next Saturday, Feb. 8 in South Bend at the Notre Dame Duals.
