STANFORD, Calif. -- Northwestern opened 2014 with a convincing 17-10 victory over Stanford at the Arrillaga Center in Stanford, Calif. Friday evening. The dual served as a precursor to the six-team Western Invitational that will take place in the same facility Saturday.

NU's foil squad posted the largest margin of victory Friday with an easy 8-1 victory. The sabre squad, which was bolstered by three freshmen in the lineup, won five of its nine bouts. The epée team fell to the Cardinal, 5-4.

A trio of sophomores, Mikela Goldstein, Charlotte Sands and Jen Yamin, led the foil squad. Yamin and Sands each won twice, while Goldstein picked up a victory as well. Three of NU's wins were obtained by default.

Newcomers Cindy Oh and Alisha Gomez-Shah picked up two wins apiece in sabre, while Julia Abelsky picked up one win to support the Wildcats.

Northwestern's epée squad was led Friday by 2013 All-America honoree Courtney Dumas. The two-time NCAA Championship qualifier picked up wins over Vivian Kong and May Peterson, while Dina Bazarbayeva, the lone senior on the Wildcats, also toppled Peterson. Sophomore Juliana Barrett picked up the final win in epée with a thrilling 5-4 triumph over Francesca Bassa. Complete results from Friday's dual are at the bottom of the page.

The main purpose of Northwestern's trip to the West Coast takes place Saturday. The 'Cats will join Stanford, UC San Diego, Caltech, Air Force and Florida to comprise the field for the 2014 Western Invitational. The Purple and White knocked off the same five foes at last season's Western Invitational by a cumulative score of 109-26. The closest dual came against the Cardinal, which NU defeated by three touches. The action begins with a rematch against the hosts at 11 a.m. CT.
