PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Northwestern continued its strong start to the 2009-10 season, posting a perfect 6-0 record at the Philadelphia Invitational to improve to 10-0 on the year in dual meets. With the six victories, head coach Laurie Schiller comes within a whisker of joining the exclusive 1,000-win club, boasting a career record of 999-412.

The Wildcats opened up the day looking to avenge a 14-13 loss to Temple in last season's NU Duals, and avenge the loss they did by defeating the Owls 16-11 behind a 6-3 performance from the epée squad. Northwestern then routed Drew 26-1 with both the epée and foil teams posting 9-0 records.

An 8-1 result by the foil team proved to be the difference against host Penn as the 'Cats held off the Quakers 16-11. A strong showing from both the foil and sabre squads helped the Wildcats defeat Duke 18-9, with the sabre again looking strong against North Carolina, teaming with the epéeists to finish off the Tar Heels 21-6. Northwestern closed out the day with an 18-9 victory over Sacred Heart behind an 8-1 showing from the foil team.

All three weapons posted winning records on the day as the foil recorded victories over all six opponents and combined for a 43-11 record for the afternoon. Both the epée and sabre squads were 4-2 for the Invitational, as the epée finished 38-16 and the sabre posted a 34-20 record in Philadelphia.

Northwestern takes a break from dual-meet competition this weekend, traveling to San Jose, Calif., for the USFA North American Cup beginning Friday, Jan. 15, and running through Monday, Jan. 18. Schiller will then go for his 1,000th career victory as the Wildcats travel to New York City to compete in the NYU Duals on Saturday, Jan. 23.
