    1997-98 Women's Fencing Outlook

    The 1997-98 season should be no different than any other for the Northwestern Fencing team. After posting their 18th winning season in 19 tries under head coach Laurie Schiller last season, the 'Cats return their top two guns this year. Seniors Tiffany Groth and Michelle Shaffner lead the way for NU. Groth, sixth on the NU career win list in the foil, will be back to led the team. She was 88-39 a year ago and has 233 career wins. Leading the way in the epee is Shaffner. Last season she moved into second place on the NU career win list in the epee. She posted 121 wins against just 39 losses.

    1996-97 SEASON RECAP
    The Northwestern Fencing team kept the beat rolling last year, posting their 18th winning season in 19 tries under head coach Laurie Schiller. The 'Cats went 18-11 overall with the foil posting a 21-12 record and epee going 26-7. After going just 10-10 in their first 20 bouts, NU reeled off eight straight wins. The foil team also started 10-10, but won 11 of their remaining 13 matches to close out the season. Junior Tiffany Groth led the way in the foil with an impressive 88-39 mark on the year. She moved into sixth place on the NU all-time foil win list with 233 career victories. Fellow junior Michelle Schaffner was tops on the squad in the epee, going 121-39. She also placed 24th at the NCAA Championships. She is now second all-time at NU with 219 career epee wins.
