EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern freshman forward Maggie Lyon (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the conference announced today. Lyon filled the stat sheet in NU’s two contests last week, averaging 15.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 1.0 steal per game.
Lyon was a key contributor in Northwestern’s 67-63 comeback victory on the road at Boston College on Nov. 28. She posted 16 points, including two 3-pointers in the final six minutes of the game when NU staged its comeback. Lyon had four of the Wildcats’ season-high nine 3-pointers on Wednesday and also added six rebounds, four assists and a steal in NU’s sixth victory of the season.
Lyon once again posted double figures Sunday at DePaul, leading the Wildcats with 15 points. She also had a team-high six assists to go along with five rebounds and a steal.
Through seven games, Lyon is currently second on the team in scoring, averaging 15.0 points per game and has tallied double figures in every game so far this season.
This is the first weekly honor for Lyon, but the third this season for a Northwestern freshman. Fellow forward Lauren Douglas was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week twice (Nov. 12, Nov. 26), giving the Wildcats a player of the week award in three of the first four weeks of the season.
Lyon and the Wildcats (6-1) have a busy weekend on the horizon, playing at Illinois State Friday at 7 p.m. and then return home Sunday to host Bowling Green at 1 p.m.
