EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern forward Nia Coffey (Minneapolis, Minn./Hopkins) swept this week’s conference awards, taking home Big Ten Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week honors. The 6-1 first-year forward averaged a double-double last week with 23.5 points and 10.5 rebounds in NU’s wins over Lafayette and No. 25 DePaul.
Coffey had a solid start to the week, tying a career-high with 27 points, while adding 11 rebounds, four blocks, four steals and four assists in NU’s 66-64 win over Lafayette. She then followed that up with 20 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks as the Wildcats upset No. 25 DePaul, 82-79 at Welsh-Ryan Arena on Sunday.
Coffey has four double-doubles in the young seven-game season, along with six games in double-digit scoring and five with 10+ rebounds. She leads the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 18.1 points and 9.3 rebounds and is one of just two Big Ten players to rank amongst the top 10 in the conference in both categories.
This is the first Big Ten Player of the Week honor for Coffey and the first for any Wildcat player since Amy Jaeschke won the award on Feb. 2, 2011. She is now a two-time Big Ten Freshman of the Week honoree after winning the award following the first week of the season.
The Wildcats (6-1), who are receiving votes in the Associated Press poll that was released Monday, have one game on the slate for this week, hosting NC State (8-1) in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Thursday, Dec. 5. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
