EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern begins the 2012-13 regular-season this Friday, Nov. 9 at 7:00 p.m. CT against the University of Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks. The 'Cats have plenty to be excited about as the season starts rolling, welcoming back a handful of starters from last year and introducing a new, talented freshman class.
All-Big Ten Honorable Mention and NU's leading scorer in 2011-12, Kendall Hackney, is poised for a big senior season, and sophomore Karly Roser looks to build off her strong first season at point guard. Talented center Dannielle Diamant returns her for her senior year as well. Alex Cohen and Meghan McKeown are also ready to step into leading roles this year for the 'Cats.
But perhaps the biggest storyline coming into the season is Northwestern's youth movement as five highly-touted freshmen join the Northwestern roster this year. This freshmen class includes 6-2 forward Devon Brookshire (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.), 6-2 forward Lauren Douglas (Collierville, Tenn.), 6-3 forward Christen Johnson (Powder Springs, Ga.), 5-6 guard Nof Kedem (Olesh, Israel) and 6-1 forward Maggie Lyon (Wilmette, Ill.). They enjoyed a nice welcome into the Wildcat family last weekend as the 'Cats cruised to a 91-34 victory in its lone exhibition game against St. Francis (Ill.).

    Right Out of the Gate
The home-opener against UT Martin will be a good first test for the new blend of Wildcats. The Skyhawks have been one of the hottest mid-major programs in the country recently and will be seeking their third straight conference title in the Ohio Valley Conference this year. With much of last year's team returning, including 2013 State Farm Wade Trophy watch list honoree Heather Butler, the Skyhawks could be looking for a great spark to begin hunting for another NCAA Tournament berth.
The team will follow up their opener with Central Michigan on Sunday, Nov. 11. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. at Welsh-Ryan Arena against another team with something to prove. CMU went to the NIT last year for the second year in a row, after missing a berth in the NCAA Tournament by 1.5 seconds, losing in the MAC Championship game last year. The Wildcats hope to get off to a good start of what should be an exciting year against two good teams this weekend.
    Settling in at Welsh-Ryan Arena
Northwestern fans will have plenty of opportunities to see the Wildcats to open the season as they play their first five games at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Following this weekend, NU will host Howard (Monday, Nov. 19), Yale, (Wednesday, Nov. 21) and cross-town rival Loyola (Sunday, Nov. 25) before making its first road trip of the season to Chestnut Hill, Mass., to face Boston in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.

    Opponent Profile
    Tennessee Martin Skyhawks
    2011-12 Record: 23-9 (15-1 OVC)
    Series History: 0-0 (First Meeting)
Of Note: The Skyhawks are looking to follow-up on two of their most successful seasons in school history. Last year, UT Martin won their second straight Ohio Valley Conference Title, and with that its second straight NCAA Tournament berth. The season-opener at Northwestern is the first game of a very tough non-conference schedule for the rising mid-major.
    Opponent Profile
    Central Michigan Chippewas
    2011-12 Record: 20-16
    Series History: Northwestern leads, 4-0
Last Meeting: Nov. 11, 2011 in Mt. Pleasant; Northwestern 69, CMU 60
Of Note: The Chippewas will be playing with a chip on their shoulder following a last-second loss in the MAC Championship game last year. Seven players who started 15 or more games will be returning this year. CMU opens its season on the road at Bradley on Friday before visiting Evanston on Sunday.
