EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern women’s basketball head coach Joe McKeown announced the team captains for the 2013-2014 season today. Seniors La'Terria Taylor (Chicago, Ill./Von Stueben) and Meghan McKeown (Fairfax, Va./Loyola Academy (Ill.)) along with junior Karly Roser (Hamilton, Ontario, Canada/Saint Mary’s) have been named tri-captains for the ’Cats.
“I’m really excited about our captains,” Northwestern head coach Joe McKeown said. “They bring great leadership, commitment and academic excellence to our program. All three had to overcome adversity during their careers and they have great respect from their teammates, the coaching staff and the Northwestern Community.”
Roser received All-Big Ten honors a year ago after ranking second in the Big Ten in assists (6.3) while establishing career-best averages in points (9.4), rebounds (4.9) and assists (6.3). As NU’s floor general, she has started all 60 games over the last two seasons, averaging 34.5 minutes per game and is an Academic All-Big Ten honoree.
McKeown will be back on the court in 2013-14 after missing most of last season following hip surgery. In her sophomore season she saw action in every game. Off the court, McKeown has earned Academic All Big Ten honors for the past two seasons and is an active member in the Northwestern University chapter of Autism Speaks U.
Taylor has seen an upward battle with the women’s basketball program, with multiple injuries during her first two seasons. She played her first game as a Wildcat late in the 2012-13 season with her first career appearance against Ohio State on Feb. 10, 2013. She played the final seven games of the season and went on to achieve Academic All-Big Ten distinction.
The three Northwestern captains will guide the Wildcats through a 29-game regular-season schedule that tips off Sunday, Nov. 10 against UIC at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Before the regular-season opener, Northwestern will host Lewis for an exhibition game on Wednesday, Nov. 6 at 5 p.m. That game is part one of a double-header as the Northwestern men’s basketball team also faces Lewis in an exhibition game at 7:15 p.m.
