Crema, Italy-- Northwestern used a late surge in the fourth period to down Team Crema, 67-58, Monday evening, and remain undefeated on its 2012 Italian Tour. Freshman Lauren Douglas and senior Kendall Hackney not only contributed 12 and 11 points, respectively, but also propelled the 'Cats to victory with timely baskets. Senior Dannielle Diamant joined Hackney and Douglas in double figures with 10 points.
The "match" as they call it in Italy, was competitive from the tip, with the Wildcats finding themselves with a 13-12 edge after the first period. Per FIBA rules, there are four 10-minute periods. Hackney led the way with seven points, providing a spark as part of the second group of five substitutes. Northwestern has been mixing lineups and "starters" throughout the Tour.
The 'Cats led a slight 34-30 lead at intermission, but the advantage was short-lived as Crema took a 38-37 lead mid-way through the third period. The game was back and forth from there and was deadlocked at 52 entering the final period.
The freshmen stepped up in the final five minutes, led by Douglas who converted a huge and-one to put NU ahead by four, 57-53. Fellow classmate Christen Johnson followed with a big and-one opportunity on the following possession, firmly shifting momentum in favor of the visitors. Northwestern scored 13 of the game's last 18 points to secure the victory.
Northwestern wraps up the Tour Tuesday with its final match against Gianst Marghera at 11:30 a.m. CT.
