LA SPEZIA, Italy-- Northwestern survived an exceptionally physical game against Virtus La Spezia, topping the professional team, 72-58, Saturday evening. Senior Kendall Hackney led the 'Cats with 15 points while sophomore Alex Cohen added 11.
Virtus opened the game on fire, draining three triples in the opening minutes to pull ahead 9-0. But Northwestern clawed back to take a 17-16 lead after the first period, thanks to an 11-of-13 effort from the charity stripe and a 15-7 edge on the boards.
The second period was more physical than the first with both teams eventually arriving at halftime deadlocked at 30
The third period proved to be the longest one yet, because a foul only counted as a team foul--not an individual foul--so no one could foul out and after six team fouls in the half, the teams were granted two free-throws on any foul.
The Wildcats were 27-of-29 from the free-throw line, and eventually pulled away for their second victory of the Tour. NU dominated on the glass, out-rebounding La Specia, 44-23.
Lauren Douglas and Dannielle Diamant each added nine points for the 'Cats.
Northwestern returns to action on Monday when it plays Team Basket Crema in Biassono, Italy at approximately 10 a.m. CT. The team will continue to Stresa, Italy following the game and will wrap-up the 2012 Italian Tour the following day, Tuesday, facing Gianst Marghera at 11:20 CT in Stresa.
