ROME, Italy-- Freshman Lauren Douglas led Northwestern with 17 points as Northwestern cruised to an 84-27 victory over Basket Pomezia Thursday evening in Rome. Kate Popovec added 15 points for the Wildcats.

"I thought it was a great way to open up our trip considering that we haven't touched a basketball in about a week," head coach Joe McKeown said. "I thought we did some really good things. It was a great opportunity for everyone to play together and to look at different lineups, different combinations."

Per FIBA rules, there were four, 10-minute quarters, which gave the Wildcats the opportunity to mix and match lineups. Everyone found the scoring column, which was topped by Douglas and Popovec and sophomore Alex Cohen, who tallied 10 points.

Northwestern came out on fire, draining 4 of its first 6 attempts in the opening three minutes to seize a 9-0 lead. A three-pointer by freshman Maggie Lyon and six points from Popovec pushed the Wildcats ahead to a lead they would never relinquish.

Northwestern returns to action at Noon CT Saturday against Virtus La Spezia in Florence.
