ROME, Italy-- Northwestern's 10-day Italian Tour began at O'Hare Airport on Tuesday, Aug. 27 as the 'Cats embarked on an 8.5-hour flight to Rome. Following a smooth flight, the team was greeted by their tour guide for the duration of the trip, Fabio, and taken immediately to St. Paul's Outside the Walls, the Colosseum and then their hotel.

Top 5 Things from Day 1 in Rome (as told by Kendall Hackney, Maggie Lyon, Devon Brookshire, Meghan McKeown and Alex Cohen):

    1. The Colosseum was a top favorite because of the grand size and iconic archways that immediately grab your attention. The fact that it was built in only eight years starting back in 72 AD was pretty fascinating.

    2. The Roman Forum was full of Roman ruins that were full of history and it's believed that under the level we walked through there are at least 8 levels of more societies beneath!

    3. St. Paul's Outside the Walls Basilica was a fascinating sight with the apostle Paul's tomb site and a stunning interior of elaborate paintings and marble statues.

    4. The Gelato - Fragola (strawberry), Hazelnut, and Stracciatella (Chocolate Chip) was all delicioso!

    5. For dinner we all had pizza or pasta (shocking since we're in Italy!) and the spaghetti and fettucine alfredo topped American pasta hands down. The pizza was also very tasty because of the hearty bread they bake it on and the unique, Italian sauce. Molto bueno!

Stay tuned for photos and a video update following today's excursion to the Sistine Chapel, Vatican and St. Peter's Basilica!

    Arrivederci!
