EVANSTON, Ill. – The Northwestern women’s basketball team will face a challenging 13-game nonconference schedule during the 2013-14 season. A number of squads on this year’s slate advanced to postseason play in 2012-13, including an NCAA Final Four team.

It all begins on Sunday, Nov. 10 when NU renews its rivalry with UIC in this year’s home opener at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Northwestern leads the all-time series vs. the Flames, 16-6, but this is the first meeting between the two teams since the 2007-08 season.

The UIC contest is one of nine home games in Evanston as the Wildcats welcome a number of familiar foes and first-time opponents to Welsh-Ryan Arena. Including the UIC game, Northwestern plays four straight home games before hitting the road for the first time. The other home games include Chicago State (Wednesday, Nov. 13), UNLV (Sunday, Nov. 17) and Hofstra (Wednesday, Nov. 20).

NU’s first road trip of the season takes the squad to Berkeley, Calif., on Sunday, Nov. 24, as the ’Cats face a California squad that advanced to the NCAA Women’s Final Four a year ago. These two teams battled in a close game at Welsh-Ryan Arena last season during NU’s annual Field Trip Day.

The Wildcats then return to Evanston for three straight games, and do not leave the state of Illinois until late December. NU faces first-time opponent Lafayette from the Patriot League on Wednesday, Nov. 27 before welcoming its longest-standing nonconference rival, DePaul, on Sunday, Dec. 1. The Blue Demons are one of three 2013 NCAA Tournament teams on NU’s nonconference schedule.

Northwestern stays at home for this year’s Big Ten/ACC Challenge, welcoming North Carolina State on Thursday, Dec. 5. The Wolfpack played in the 2013 WNIT and this is the second time these two squads have met in the challenge. The ’Cats took the previous meeting, 76-59, in 2011 at Welsh-Ryan Arena.

The second road trip of the season takes NU just down the road to Loyola on Saturday, Dec. 14. This will be the 22nd meeting all-time between the two Chicago-area schools with Northwestern holding an unblemished 21-0 mark against the Ramblers.

Two more first-time opponents visit Welsh-Ryan Arena as the ’Cats close out the nonconference home portion of their schedule hosting Oral Roberts for this year’s edition of Field Trip Day on Monday, Dec. 16 and welcome IUPUI on Saturday, Dec. 21. Oral Roberts participated in the 2013 NCAA Tournament while IUPUI played in the 2013 WNIT.

The nonconference slate wraps up in New Orleans with the Wildcats participating in the Tulane Tournament, Saturday, Dec. 28-Sunday, Dec. 29. NU’s opponents in The Big Easy are still TBA but Tulane (2013 WNIT squad), Indiana State (2013 WNIT squad) and Northeastern are scheduled to participate in the tournament.

All times for the 2013-14 nonconference schedule are still to be announced. The 2013-14 Big Ten schedule, along with Big Ten Network schedule, will be released at a later date. In May, the Big Ten Conference announced single and double plays for the 2013 season and NU’s single-play opponents for next year will be Illinois (home), Indiana (away), Iowa (away), Michigan (home), Michigan State (home) and Ohio State (away). The Wildcats will face Minnesota, Nebraska, Purdue, Wisconsin and Penn State twice during the regular season.

Northwestern returns three starters and 10 letterwinners from last year’s squad, including 2013 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, Maggie Lyon, and All-Big Ten point guard Karly Roser. Head coach Joe McKeown and his staff add four talented newcomers to the 2013-14 squad including Nia Coffey, who recently won a gold medal with USA Basketball at the 2013 FIBA U19 World Championships, Ashley Deary, Christen Inman and Allie Tuttle.
