EVANSTON, Ill. -- The NU Science Club hosted a Boys and Girls Club group along with the Northwestern men’s and women’s basketball teams Tuesday, May 21. Senior men’s basketball player Reggie Hearn, along with members of the women’s team, including sophomore Alex Cohen and freshmen Maggie Lyon, Christen Johnson, Lauren Douglas, Tessa Haldes and Devon Brookshire all helped out with the group of about 30 students.

The group has been studying the neurobiology of sports and wanted to test shooting ability when depth perception changed. The players shot baskets with one eye covered and both eyes open and the students collected data. Afterwards, the group interacted with the basketball players, toured Welsh-Ryan Arena and ran the 40-yard dash at the indoor football field in Trienens Hall.

"It was a perfect blend of science experiments, inspiring role models, and fun!” said Michael Kennedy, founder and director of the NU Science Club.

NU Science Club is a mentor-based after school program for kids in middle school.  It is a 10-week program hosted every fall, winter and spring by the Robert R. McCormick Boys & Girls Club of Chicago and Northwestern’s Center for Genetic Medicine.
