EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern will play host to NC State on Thursday, Dec. 5, as part of the 2013 Big Ten/ACC Challenge, the conference announced today. The seventh annual event takes place over two days in December (Dec. 4-5) with all 12 Big Ten squads facing ACC foes.
The Wildcats are 1-1 all-time against the Wolfpack, recording a 76-59 win during the 2011 Challenge, which also was contested in Welsh-Ryan Arena. The first meeting between these two teams came during the 1981-82 season.
It will be back-to-back days of the Wildcats vs. Wolfpack with the Northwestern men’s basketball team playing at NC State on Wednesday, Dec. 4 for the men’s side of the Challenge, before the women play on Thursday, Dec. 5.
Northwestern was one of five Big Ten teams to win their Challenge matchup last year and is one of two Big Ten squads, along with Illinois, to record back-to-back wins at the event. In 2012, the Wildcats came back to down Boston College, 67-63, on the road thanks to nine 3-pointers and a 10-0 run down the stretch.
The ACC and the Big Ten have long been among the most dominant conferences on the women's basketball scene. For the sixth time in conference history, the Big Ten had at least six teams selected to the NCAA Women's Basketball Championship in 2013, and Big Ten teams have appeared in the NCAA Sweet 16 in 27 of the last 29 years.
Last season, the ACC was represented by six overall postseason squads, including five teams in the NCAA Women's Basketball Championship. The five teams in the tournament marked the 19th consecutive season at least four ACC teams have been selected to the field.
